What do people say about Ear Mountain Charters?

Captain Eric and Alice were amazing! Alice told us as soon as she met us that this was going to be the highlight of our trip. She was right!! They were such gracious and friendly hosts on their boat. They were as excited about catching the fish as we were! We truly had an amazing experience and even brought some hats and sweatshirts back home. Kiss the Fish

My wife and I had the privilege of going out with Eric and Alice for 3 straight days whale/nature watching. The activities themselves were terrific -- a wide variety of humpback behaviors and play; sea otters/lions; a bear (!); and my first (lucky) experience with orca. Knowledge of and full respect for the animals was first rate. What made the trips even more interesting was simply learning a bit about these truly terrific-yet-humble people who were raised in Hoonah (Alice) and have contributed so much to the town as educators, mentors, and parents. They patiently and openly explained the ins/outs of everything we asked them. This was an extraordinary, completely unexpected bonus to an already fantastic experience.

We had a terrific time with Capt Eric and Alice. My family booked a 4 hr trip with Ear Mountain Charters as part of our Alaskan cruise. The fishing charter was a highlight of our trip. Myself, three adult kids, and two grandkids ages 13 & 11 all had a great time and caught a lot of fish. Capt Eric knew where the fish were biting and made sure we enjoyed the trip. Eric and Alice are both teachers and were absolutely wonderful with the grandkids. In addition to all of us bringing in some large halibut, the Capt brought us to a pod of whales that were incredible to watch. Both Capt Eric and Alice went out of their way to make sure everyone was satisfied with the trip and provided good balance between fishing and sightseeing. The boat and gear provided were clean and well maintained. I recommend this charter without reservation and hope to have the opportunity to enjoy time with Eric and Alice in the future.

We had an excellent time on Captain Eric's boat, catching lots of halibut as well as feeding our herring to plenty more. Eric knows his stuff and really wants his guests to catch fish. We caught our fish and had an amazing time.

My 11 year old loves fishing and so I wanted her to have a chance to fish during our Alaska cruise. I booked a 1/2 day tour for her, my husband and 2 nephews. They all rated it as the highlight of their Alaska cruise experience. And Eric was super responsive to questions. So glad we did this!

Short day, great experience. Like most, we had a cruise stop here. We try to stay away from the canned excursions. I started looking and found Eric's EMC. I called, we booked a 4 hour halibut fishing charter. Eric took care of everything. Picked us up at the excursion hub and off to his boat. Four hours later we had caught fish, spotted wildlife and gained a wealth of knowledge.

We didn't get to go on our fishing trip because our cruise cancelled this port due to mechanical issues. We got our refund without any hassle. Super happy with their customer service.

We planned this excursion on our own while cruising Alaska and it was great! We had so much fun with Alice and Eric. They couldn't have been nicer. We even saw bears on the shoreline! They provided just the right amount of assistance and we caught (and released) lots of fish. It was a great time and I would highly recommend. I had been worried about seasickness but it was not issue and the boat they use is great - almost brand new.

We booked a half day halibut excursion after our previous booking called and cancelled on our group of 3. I was able to get on Captain Eric's boat. While the fishing was slow, we caught one halibut and one type of rock fish, we saw soo many humpback whales, stellar sea lions, herring fluttering on the water, the tour was worth every penny even with the lack of fish reeled in. You cannot guarantee to catch fish. Definitely recommend.

Captain Eric has taken us out twice on our Alaskan Adventures. Super nice and a new boat this year. Had a great time although we didn't catch anything this year. Last time was better for the fishing. We did see a lot of whales and other marine life though so the trip was great. Thanks.

I went in a group of 4 ranging in age from 14 to 70, and everyone had a great time on our half-day trip. Captain Eric was patient and attentive, making sure everyone was tended to. His lifetime of being a school teacher and wrestling coach is evident in his ease of relating to the young ones. His boat is amazing! Practically brand new, top of the line. We didn't have to go far from the dock to the fishing spot (maybe 15-20 minutes), and we amassed 4 keeper halibut and a couple small ones, as well as a rock fish. Would definitely book again if in the area.

We had an awesome day fishing with Eric. Our foursome including teenagers 16 and 19 years old had a wonderful day. Captain Eric made it easy especially for those of us who haven't fished in years! We caught halibut and multiple species of cod. He was waiting for us on time exactly where his email said he would be. He was competent and organized and we had a great day!!!! We look forward to our fish arriving home to Virginia from our Alaska adventure.Easy to book as well. Feel confident booking this. You do NOT have to book only with the cruise lines.

We loved fishing with Captain Eric! This trip was in a smaller setting(only four of us) so it was very easy to ask questions and learn more. We caught 4 halibut and 2 different kinds of cod. He was very helpful teaching us how to catch the fish properly. We also saw whales while we were out on the water! Very great experience!

Our family of four adults went fishing with Eric and his son. We caught a 32” halibut and Eric was so helpful and kind all day. Out of all of our excursions, this was the best adventure we had in Alaska! Would highly recommend!!

We had a fabulous afternoon fishing with captain Eric and his son Daniel. Two minutes after my son put his pole in the water he caught a 42 inch halibut. It took him 15 minutes to reel him in with captain Eric’s expert advice. We were sad that we had to throw him back in as he was too big to keep. Eric was very enthusiastic about all of our experiences and was rooting for us to catch more so we could have them shipped home. We did end up with 2 more halibut. Thank you Eric and Daniel for a fun filled day! We would do it again if we could!

Ear Mountain Charters is a top notch guide service. Eric & Daniel were great, they explained some of the history of Hoonah & surrounding islands & put us on fish! We had a great time. Definitely our favorite day of the cruise. Thanks much Eric & Daniel!!!

I found Captain Eric Williams online when it came time to consider excursions for our Alaskan cruise, he was responsive during our booking and when I followed up just prior to our cruise. I prefer finding excursions not tied to cruise lines and Ear Mountain Charters was an amazing choice for everyone on the boat that day. Eric picked us up at the meet up location earlier than planned as our ship arrived in port about an hour ahead of schedule and he was watching for the arrival. We had a short ride to the dock and he was able to share great information about the area during the drive. We quickly got onto the water and his extensive knowledge of these waters was apparent. My husband caught 2 halibut and I caught one, I lost count of how many the other folks caught on the boat - it was such an amazing experience and Eric was the best guide imaginable. Book a fishing or whale watching trip through this company and you will not be disappointed!

We were visiting Hoonah as a cruise ship stop and decided to book our own private fishing excursion instead of with the cruise line and we are so glad we did! From the first contact months before our trip, Captain Eric was nothing but prompt, courteous, and professional. He picked us up at the visitor's center and drove us into town to his charter boat. He helped us spot whales as we were exiting the harbor and swiftly took us to our fishing spot and with a quick lesson we had our hooks in the water and it wasn't long before we were catching our halibut! My husband and I each caught and released about 6-7 halibut and we ended up keeping two to have processed and shipped home. Captain Eric was extremely helpful on board and stopped to look at an eagle's nest on the way back to the visitor center. He even delivered our kept fish to the processor and had a price sheet on board as well as a processing application so we weren't shocked by the cost (it's pricey so be prepared). Honestly one of the best days on our ten-day Alaskan cruise - thank you Captain Eric!

I had a fantastic afternoon Halibut fishing with Eric Williams, Captain, at Ear Mountain Charters.Eric is very knowledgeable of the area. He is an honest person and fun to fish with.Would highly recommend Eric if you want to have fun and success fishing.

We had an amazing day on the water with captain Eric. My husband caught 5 halibut and a rock fish and I caught a halibut and rock fish as well. As we looked over and saw the crowded whale watching boats, we had to laugh because we were getting the exact same views and experiences. This is one of very few times in our two weeks we were with someone from the area who was able to talk about the history and tell stories from experience. If I went back I would go through Ear Mountain Charters for sure!

My son and I set up a day to fish with these guys it ended up being 5 of us total because of another group ended up scheduling it too. Regardless we had plenty of room. The owner Eric was a great host and was very knowledgeable about the area and bait and what we were fishing for. We did not end up keeping the smaller Haula bit that we caught but my son did catch a 60 inch 120 pound halibut bad news is we had to put it back because it was between 38 inches and 80 inches. Regardless of that we still had a great day and were able to enjoy the beautiful landscape of this town. I know they aren't part of the Disney excursions but we booked this one ourselves and saved a lot of money and caught a lot of fish they are a great company to fish with and I highly recommend them.

I don't remember seeing a pick up time on our invoice but other than that things went smooth. I did't have cell service or internet to contact him but as soon as we did he replied. Short walk from ship to pick up location. Drive to dock was short and interesting enough. We got straight to business on the way out, getting licenses and talking expectations. Halibut were hitting but we had some difficulty landing them (new line broke losing fish tackle and gear). Gear itself was in good working order new. Eric had great patients with the kids, setting up and going over gear as well as prepping bait and such. On the way back we logged our catch and talked about processing and shipping. He had prices and everything from Smokeys. By the way Smokeys was great, sending photos of fish on scale pre and post processing, received direct communications from them, and fish arrived on time and perfectly packaged in reasonable sized portions.

I can not recommend Ear Mountain charters any higher! Eric was able to take myself , my son, and nephew out on short notice. He was an excellent captain and really worked hard to get us the bites we desired. Please do yourself a favor and use Ear Mountain Charters for your next fishing excursion in Hoonah, you will not regret your decision.

Fantastic fishing experiance in Icy Strait Point, Hoonah, AK. Eric met us at the cruise ship dock and drove us a short distance to the marina. We were underway quickly after a safety briefing and completed paperwork enroute to where he dropped anchor. He quickly baited our rods and were fishing. For the next 2 hours we caught a dozen fish and kept the biggest a 38 inch - 33 pound halibut. He arranged to have it processed and shipped back home. It arrived frozen solid and we are very much enjoying eating this wonderful fish. A once in a lifetime excellent fishing trip.

We called Eric 2 hours before hitting the docks and he saved our day from being extremely disappointing when another charter cancelled our pre-paid trip. He explained where to meet him and was waiting for us when we got into town. He said he was going to wait to see if he got anyone else, but instead when we got there, he said, "you are here, let's go!" We walked down to the public docks with him and off we went. We were the first boat on the water and he found the whales in the bay within the first 5 minutes. He masterfully positioned us to see the whales all day, keeping a healthy distance and giving them plenty of room to navigate. We saw the humpback whales gently surfacing together as a pod, bubble feeding, and even breaching. We were on the water with him for 4 hours and he also found eagles, seals, a bear and two cubs, and lots and lots of humpback whales. He is very knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. He has lived and was a teacher in Hoonah for 20+ years. He loves the outdoors and is still very excited to see the whales feeding and breaching. I'm sure after being on the water as many times as he has it would be easy to find it repetitive or boring, but he is genuinely enthusiastic and passionate about seeing the whales and wildlife. You can tell he is a fisherman at heart, but his love for the wildlife in the area goes beyond just fishing. On top of being a great captain and having a clean and comfortable boat, he is also a good person. When we docked the boat at the end of our trip, there was an older woman and her husband looking for a boat they had booked a fishing trip on. The boat was not sitting at the public dock but Eric offered to help them. The captain they had booked with was not picking up his phone and Eric helped take them down to the private docks (very out of the way) and found the captain of the boat and got them on their way. Overall a great trip and a wonderful experience.

We had the best time! This was by far the best charter I have ever had. Our captain, Eric, was extremely knowledgeable and certainly got us over the fish! My husband and I caught 15 nice halibut. He was kind and patient with me (who had almost no inexperience) but allowed my more experienced husband to do everything himself to bring in his own fish. And his son! Oh my, what a wonderful young man. You don't always find teenagers comfortable chatting with us older folks on a variety of subjects and he worked so very hard to make sure we had a great experience. I could go on and on about these two fellows but suffice it to say--if you want a great day on the water, call Eric!

I just returned from an Alaska cruise and booked a halibut trip with Eric Williams of Ear Mountain Charters. The trip couldn't have been better. He was a great person and guide. It's easy to tell a good captain by the quality of his equipment, tackle and bait. He did not skimp on any of these and taught us well. In a 3 1/2 hr. Trip, we had non-stop action. The four of us ( or 3 1/2 if you consider the lady who was with us was not interested in catching a lot of fish but did get 2 ) boated 20+ halibut and several other species. We lost many bites while learning the technique but as the Capt. was pulling in the anchor to leave, we had a triple header and only 3 of us were fishing. Needless to say catching fish helped make it a great trip but with Eric I'm sure that if you didn't catch fish, they weren't there and he would still make the trip enjoyable. I've done a lot of fishing and was great. If you get a chance, take a trip with him and save money by not booking through the cruise line. My processed fish was delivered on time as promised and I'm looking forward to the first meal.

On August 26, 2014 our cruise ship anchored at Icy Straight Point, AK. Four of us went Halibut fishing on a 1/2 day charter with Capt. Eric of Ear Mountain Charters. After a short boat ride to the fishing grounds we began catching fish within the first couple minutes. The fish continued to bite for the next 3 1/2 hours, landing a total of 20 halibut and several cod. We lost many more. All fish were released. We had a great time with Capt. Eric not only with the fishing but his knowledge of the area. I would highly recommend a fishing trip with Ear Mountain Charters.

Four adults and two teens we booked this trip instead of booking thru the cruise line. We'll worth it the other reviews were spot on. Captain Eric was great. We caught a total of 12 halibut and one grey cod. So everyone caught something and we saw a brown bear on the shore and a whale blowing nearby. No issues meeting up or getting back in time. We went first thing in the morning. Great small outfitter with personal service. The teen girl that wasn't interested caught 5 halibut so she loved having the bragging rights! Captain Eric provided some good ideas for afternoon in hoonah too. Highly recommend this outfitter no need to pay extra from the cruise line and get less service. We loved that it was just the 6 of us! We wish we did a full day instead of half it was so fun.

Our family of 5 recently spent the afternoon with Captain Eric on a fishing and sightseeing adventure that we won't soon forget. While we only had a few bites, we saw whales, bald eagles and a sea lion feasting on a salmon! Eric and his wife Alice were friendly and shared an abundance of Alaskan history. We highly recommend this excursion!

Captain Eric is wonderful! My husband and I booked a whale watching tour for the morning and a fishing trip in the afternoon. We picked up my dad and brothers to join us for the afternoon fishing trip. We got amazing whale photos. We even saw a mama Killer Whale with two of her babies. It was such a wonderful experience. Captain Eric keeps in contact with some of the other tour operators out there, which is great because they pass info to each other to find the best spots to view whales. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. The halibut fishing was also amazing. Captain Eric described exactly how a bite would feel on a line (it's a bit different than other fishing that I've done because you're fishing off the bottom - he'll explain this to you). I felt what I thought might be a bite, and caught the first fish of the day. We caught the our limit for the day, and Captain Eric arranged to have the fish processed and shipped to us. It was delicious!!

Most people plan their excursions on a cruise well ahead of time. My husband and I did not plan an excursion for Hoonah on our Alaskan cruise. We live part time on Cape Cod and have gone on a few whale watches from Barnstable harbor. We thought 'we have seen whales and ho hum you have seen one whale, you have seen them all'. Then we got to Hoonah and realized that was 'THE' thing to do. We scurried to find a tour that was not all booked. Ear Mountain Charters was the one that a tour company came up with. It was 'GREAT"! The highlight of our Alaskan Cruise! There were only 6-8 people on the boat. We saw whale after whale. We saw an eagle who nabbed a salmon that was too large for him to pick up and so he did the breaststroke to shore. After the tour, the Captain dropped us off at the cruise ship. An altogether exhilarating experience!

Ear Mountain Charters is a great, personal-sized fishing charter (and whale watching too). Capt. Eric Williams was a great host as well as a knowledgeable fisherman who will make the most of your time. My teenage son and I were only in Hoonah (a.k.a. - Icy Strait Point) for a day as a cruise ship stop. Eric did not waste time and we were on the water fishing post haste! We were going for salmon that day and Eric did not disappoint...we enjoyed our 1/2 day and landed 4 salmon (coho and pink). Eric drove us back to the ship and we worked-out the details for processing and shipping our catch back home. The morning after we returned from our vacation, a Fed Ex delivery with our cleaned and vac-packed salmon was delivered. Captain Eric be "Da Man"! We enjoyed Ear Mountain Charters and fully recommend it for your next visit to Hoonah, Alaska!

My husband and I booked a half day charter fishing excursion with Captain Eric the end of July 2013. This was one of the highlights of our cruise. He is prompt, professional, and shares a wealth of information about Alaska. We did catch lots of fish. I would highly recommend this adventure to anyone who wants to experience fishing in Alaska.

I can't say enough about how much my husband and I enjoyed fishing with Captain Eric. This was the best day of our entire vacation. Captain Eric took great care of us. He is experienced and knows just where to go to catch the fish. We caught two big King Salmon and a whole bunch of Coho. The cruise line will tell you not to book anything outside of their services, but Captain Eric is reliable and professional. He picked us up outside the ISP gate as stated in his email and returned us on time. He arranged for us to have our Salmon shipped to us and we received it about a week later. I would recommend Ear Mountain Charters to anyone wanting to have a great fishing trip.

We booked excursion on our own not through cruise ship. It was the best excursion we took. Capt Eric sent all necessary information my email. He picked us up by pier on time. There was just the 4 of us & Eric on this excursion. We told him we would like to see whales too. He took us to a fishing spot where we could fish and whale watch- it was great. We saw lots of whales. We all caught Halibut. We wanted to ship home so Eric took care of all the details. I would highly recommend Ear Mountain Charters.

This was by far the best day of our entire vacation. We were on a 10 day cruise to Alaska for my dad's 70th birthday. The cruise ship was sold out of fishing excursions for our day in Hoonah so I looked on Trip Advisor and found Ear Mountain Charters. We couldn't have gotten luckier. Captain Eric responded to my email request within an hour and we were booked. When we got off the ship, he was there early waiting for us. We were on the water in less than 10 minutes. After we found our fishing spot, my daughter and I had two fish on in the first 5 minutes. We then hooked several cod, a 35 lb, a 90 lb and a 165 lb halibut !! Did I mention a 165 lb halibut? This was coupled with multiple humpback whale sightings and bald eagles. On the way back to the ship after an incredible day of fishing, we saw Orcas. Seeing the excitement in my daughter's eyes, Captain Eric took extra time to let her get good photos and watch these amazing animals. The fishing was amazing and the wildlife stunning but what made this trip so extraordinary was the undivided attention from Captain Eric. Every bite, caught fish, whale sighting, Captain Eric was right on it. Captain Eric was incredible and patient and supportive with my 16 year old daughter. His boat was female friendly, respectful, and professional. Not only did my dad get to help his granddaughter reel in a fish 50 lbs heavier than her (a memory that will never be forgotten), but we all got to experience the adventure on a clean, well maintained boat with a very knowledgeable captain. Captain Eric, thank you so much for the memory of a lifetime. We will be back, just to come fish with you on your boat. For those of you looking for a great excursion, you will be so happy you booked with Ear Mountain Charters! Happy Fishing!

We were SO happy and lucky to book this! We had left Hoonah/ISP until we thought it was too late. My husband called a few places and was referred to Capt. Eric. One of the highlights of our trip! We had the afternoon slot (which made me nervous as the "last tender" was at 5:30). The second we met Capt. Eric, I was fine, and could tell we were in great hands! The boat was super for the 4 of us and could easily fit up to 6. We dispensed of the fishing license quickly and headed out.All of us caught fish and in total we caught 17 halibut and 1 cod. Due to the rules/regulations and shipping costs, we just had a catch and release day, but what a day! It was so fun! After a while my son and I took a break and let my husband and daughter reel them in! I bet we could have had 25 if we had all fished the whole time.Capt provided drinks but I think we were all too busy fishing to ever have one. He also pointed out the typical spots he sees wildlife and whales, but again, the fish! Who had time to do anything but pull them in out of the water?I loved hearing about his life, what he had done before, his kids, etc. Super friendly and nice man and totally on top of helping "once-a-year" fishermen/women keep things organized, baited, etc. Cannot recommend him highly enough! Book it!

Had an excellent whale watching experience with Capt. Eric and saw at least 15 whales on June 24, 2013. Saw several at one time--couldn't be sure of count. He knows where to find the whales and is careful to keep a safe and legal distance from them. He met us in the parking lot by the dock as planned, and got us back in time to tender back to our ship without worry. Capt. Eric is easy to talk to, full of whale and Alaska knowledge, and gives you your money's worth.

We are from Florida and fish down here.We recently took a family adventure to Alaska in early June, 2013 and thought it would be great to try a new kind of fishing, Halibut. We found Captain Erick and his Ear Mountain Charters on Trip Advisor and made contact with him. He was very prompt in his reply and price quote for 4 people. He picked us up in Hoonah, Alaska right on time. His boat was only 5 minutes away. We spent 3 hours fishing and caught 7 or 8 Halibut. My 11 year old fishing enthusiast son had a blast. He helped Captain Erick bait hooks, etc. Captain Erick was very patient with my son and all of us, even though, as boat owners, we know our way around a boat and know when to help and when to get out of the way! Also, be prepared to kiss your first fish you've ever caught in Alaska as apparently this is local tradition, or Ear Mountain tradition! We had a short window of time from the end of the charter until our ship departed and Captain Erick got us back with time to spare. No worries!!! I highly recommend Ear Mountain, but book early as he's popular!

I was on a cruise with my friend and elderly parents, which called into Icy Straight Point and decided to book a Whale Watching tour with Captain Eric, who picked us up from the terminal to take us to Hoonah for our afternoon tour. The weather was not the best, but we had a memorable afternoon tracking down and then following some Humpback Whales. We were lucky enough to see a baby whale breach out of the water, which is not as common as peole think, so was a real treat. I liked the fact this was a more intimate tour, as it was only the 4 of us and Eric and his boat was well equipped and comfortable. When it started raining and getting quite cold, he even turned the heater on for us!All in all this was a lovely tour... it was value for money and is far better than a cruise recommended one!!

Our cruise ship anchored in Icy Strait AK on a cloudy July day. We (my wife and I and the friend couple we traveled with) tendered into shore and walked to the nearby town of Hoonah, small, isolated and quaint. We had reserved a 1/2 day outing with Ear Mountain Charters, and Captain Eric met us at the appointed time. His funky little boat was comfortable, and we set off to find whales. Within 15 minutes, we were following a pod, getting as close as we could. Captain Eric stayed with the pod, while pointing out other flora and fauna to us. We then went looking for bears, and Eric delivered on that count, too.The most surprising wildlife event we encountered was an eagle swimming to an island while holding a large fish in its talons; the fish was too heavy for the eagle to fly with, so the bird used its wings to swim to shore!Throughout the entire trip, Captain Eric filled us in about local lore and gave us insight as to what it's like to live in the Icy Strait region. All in all, our excursion was thrilling and informative, thanks to Captain Eric's smarts and capabilities. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to this part of the world.

My wife and I had one of the best days of our Alaska cruise fishing with Eric from Ear Mountain Charters last June. We had booked the half day fishing tour with Eric over the email ( which was easy and very efficient ) but as we are not fisherman we didnt really know what to expect. Great time - plenty of Halibut caught, whales sighted, very peaceful on the water. Highly recommended and many thanks to Eric for a day we will never forget

Captain Eric was fantastic. We were a bunch of chickens from New York City...and he showed us the best time of our entire stay. Do not hesitate to take this tour... it was amazing!

If you are looking for a fun excursion with a down-to-earth yet professional guide, you have got to book Ear Mountain Charters. While planning our September 2012 Alaskan cruise, my brother and I decided to surprise our Dad with a halibut fishing trip. I contacted Captain Eric Williams months prior to the cruise to make arrangements. Replies were prompt and all of my questions were answered to my satisfaction. Due to our sailing dates and other excursions we could not adhere to the standard time frame that Ear Mountain usually books halibut excursions. Captain Eric altered his schedule to accommodate ours and even arranged for our catch to be donated to the local seniors' centre as we could not ship it home to Canada.Captain Eric and his lovely wife Alice showed up (on time) at our pre-arranged meeting point and we were off to the harbor at Hoonah to begin our adventure. While battling varying currents and choppy waves, our captain was in complete control and we always felt safe while getting to our chosen fishing spot.Alice and Eric brought refreshments and a variety of snacks to enjoy. Both are very knowledgeable about Hoonah and fishing techniques. They made sure that we were properly educated and armed to catch fish.We enjoyed casual, sometimes humorous, conversation throughout the trip. We had several solid bites, one 10 lbs halibut and one larger halibut that managed to spit the hook within inches of the boat. While the fishing may have been slow, conversation was great and wildlife sightings were excellent. We saw 2 Alaskan coastal bears on the beach and Captain Eric got us close enough to also snap some photos. We had a humpback approach to check out the boat and surface 25 feet from our stern. We also saw seals and a small group of harbor porpoises. Our Captain made the most of every last minute on the water and then whisked us back to our ship (on time) as promised. We all had a great time and will certainly contact Ear Mountain Charters again when we return to Alaskan waters. Anyone else who is looking for a great outing with great people will contact them too!

Of all the excursions we did while on our cruise, and we did alot, this one was the most memorable. We booked a combination whale watching and halibut trip with Eric and could not be happier with the experience. From begining to end this excursion was amazing. During our cruise it seemed like we spent each morning waiting for our tour guides to arrive, not Eric he was the only one that was early and waiting on us. We were on the boat within minutes and after purchasing our fishing licenses we were on our way. On the way out Eric spotted a black bear on the shore and he got us close enough to get a few pictures. We then cruised to Aldolphus Point with great anticipation as it is known as one of the best places on the planet to view humpback whales. Upon our arrival at the point we were not dissappointed. We were literally surrounded by whales! We had been told that the humpbacks do not breach here nearly as often as they do in Hawaii, possibly due to the fact that they are gorging themselves and are just too full and heavy to breach. Well I'm not sure what was different about this day but we lost count of how many breaches we witnessed. One breach was within 70 yards of the boat and the whale was completely out of the water. Unfortunately for me I missed the shot because I was reviewing photos of a partial breach that I had captured moments before. After spending a few hours with these awesome creatures we departed for some halibut fishing. Within 15 minutes of anchoring Sue was hooked up to a large fish that turned out to be a beautiful 45 pounder! The action was steady and I finally managed to bring in a 35 pounder that went into the fishbox. It was still early and since we both had our keeper Eric offered to take us for salmon. Satisifed with our catch we elected to head back early and do some sightseeing alond the way. Again we were not dissappointed. We saw more whales right along the shore and a pair of eagles perched in some trees along the bank. Oh yea, I forgot to mention the rainbow on the way back! At the dock Eric arranged to have our catch filleted and shipped to us. The sightseeing was not over, on the way back to the ship Eric pointed out a group of whales bubble feeding right along the shore right next to the road. This was quite an adventure with a great guide, we couldn't ask for anything more! Don't hesitate to book this tour outside of the cruise line. They may try to persuade you to book their tours by telling you that the ship will leave without you if you are not back in time. Eric assured us that no one has ever missed the ship in this port due to not returning to the dock on time. Another benefit of booking directly is that the money goes into the local economy as opposed to the vast majority of the money going to the cruise line when booked thru them. Do some research and you will be appaled by the small percentage of the revenue from the excursion that actually goes to the operator.Tom M.

Four of us booked an afternoon charter with Captain Eric and we had a fantastic time. Because of out ship's schedule, we had limited time, but Captain Eric put us on halibut and we caught one nice-sized fish each. While we were fishing, Captain Eric filled us in on the history of the area and generally answered our questions about the area and Alaska. We had a great afternoon and we will definitely book with Ear Mountain Charters the next time we are in the area.

We saw more whales and Orcas than we could have ever believed. We saw triple whale tales as the whale dove in front of the boat and came up on the other side.I would recommend this tour and with this captain he goes until he finds the whales and sea lions and the dolphins.Very family oriented type of tour and captain. You got to book Captain Eric ask for Eric.

Have you ever been so close to a whale that you felt the mist from its tail emerging from the water? My family and I had no idea what we were in store for when Capt. Eric came to pick us up outside the gates of Hoonah. His boat comfortably fit our family of five plus another cruiser who decided to escape from the cruise "rat race." Capt. Eric was in communication with other independent operators in the area, and as we headed out, we heard an urgent call "orca! orca! orca!" over the radio. He took us directly to a cove where an orca killer whale was meandering by. After idling and watching this beauty make its ways to destinations unknown, I thought this was as good as it gets. But then Capt. Eric took us to where the humpbacks frolicked. We watched the gentle giants as they glided in and out of the water, with their beautiful tails emerging then disappearing into the ocean. We witnessed one whale, perfectly still, with its back out of the water and a sea lion diving over and around the whale. Then, a whale headed toward us, slowly and gently, until it was so close that we felt the mist from its tail lifting from the waters. The tail entered the water without a splash. The experience was breathtaking. While our little boat was out there soaking in the experience, a large sight seeing boat came into the cove with over a hundred people. It stayed for what felt like 10 minutes, then left. I looked at my family, thankful that we had gone off the beaten path and had chosen Ear Mountain Charters for this personal, unique, and memorable experience.

Captain Eric gathered our family of 5 (grandparents, parents and a 9 year old) from our cruise and took us about 30 minutes to the whale spot where we were surrounded and had nonstop views of the whales. Some of them came up as close as 30 feet away. We were never concerned for our safety as Eric seemed to know where they would surface. Eric also had a sonar system so that you could hear the whales sounds. I highly recommend Ear Mountain Charters.

Wow!! What a great experience.Going on our cruise our #1 priority was to see whales up close. We have seen whales and you hear why pay because you will see from the ship, it is no where close to the same experience, you need to experience this up close for your self.Eric far exceeded our expectations on this day. Good personalized service. Professional and proficient in leading this vessel to the feeding grounds. Once there did a great job spotting and putting us in the best position to view the whales. We saw so many whales we couldn't keep track, the highlight was the 2 incredibly close encounters we had, so close it got my heart racing a bit, so spectacular being that close.Almost as good was just getting to know Eric. Very nice person as well and shared a lot about the area, himself and what it is like to live and be in that area. You get out of that tourist mode and become part of it.

This excursion was absolutely amazing. My husband said afterwards that he didn't really know what to expect...we had been on whale watching excursions in New England and hadn't seen much so he wasn't real excited about this one. The day started out well with Captain Eric meeting us at the Icy Strait gate and driving us to his boat along with another couple. The boat was small but plenty of room for the four of us (enough room for another two passengers as well). We rode in the cabin on the way out to Point Adolphus (about a 30 min. ride) and saw a bear along the shore. As we got nearer to Point Adolphus we could already see several whales spouting. By the time we got there they were all around us...three breached the water right in a row. Eric said it was the first time he had ever seen that. We didn't look at our watches to know exactly how long we stayed out but it seemed to be about an hour. The cruise ship excursion didn't get nearly as close and went back in much earlier than we did. Eric was a great captain and as was true with all of our excursions it was wonderful being in a small group and getting to find out about the real Alaska and not the cruise ship version.

Our cruise ship was to dock in Icy Strait; many trip advisor reviewers said there was "nothing to do" there or in the nearby town of Hoonah (population 784) --- but there were a few reviewers who went whale watching or fishing -- and had a great time. Ear Mountain Charters was one of the boats that was enthusiastically recommended. I was lucky to book Captain Eric to go whale watching......and all I can say is, THANK YOU ERIC, and THANK YOU TRIP ADVISOR!!!!!Our excursion with Eric turned out to be a major highlight of our trip. Within a half an hour, he found a pod of five or six whales....being in a small boat (there were several other small boats also in the vicinity), we were able to approach them quite closely. We followed them around the cove for almost an hour. As other reviewers have noted, we also saw a brown bear on a nearby beach....and in what was a rare treat, Eric spotted a bald eagle swimming in the water -- it had snagged a big fish and was unable to fly away with it. We watched breathlessly as the eagle swam to shore, draged the fish onto a rock, and finally was able to fly up into a nearby tree with it. Nature at its best!!!!I was so glad that we did not book the more expensive cruise ship excursion -- a much bigger boat that was unable to approach whales as easily as Eric did. Friends who accompanied us were concerned that since we didn't take a cruise excursion, and if we were late getting back to the ship, it wouldn't wait for us. Eric assured me that no local operator has ever missed getting a passenger back in time. And true to his word, we were returned to the dock in plenty of time.It was also a pleasure to spend time with Eric. A retired school teacher from Hoonah, he is personable and knowledgeable about his community. He also told us where to get lunch before we went onboard (he supplies drinks); and the fresh salmon iin the homemade tacos was the best I ever ate!

We had a great experience whale watching with Ear Mountain Charters. After reading reviews for all the ports on our Alaska cruise we thought Icy Strait Point would be the best place to go whale watching, and Captain Eric would be the best guide. We weren't disappointed! My parents had been on 2 other Alaska cruises but had never seen the whales. Captain Eric was very knowledgable and thoughtful - he made accommodations for my parents who have a hard time walking. We saw bears on the shore, lots of whales and sea lions, and a sea lion even popped his head up about 5 feet from the boat to check us out. We'll never forget the experience and highly recommend Ear Mountain Charters. Thank you Captain Eric!!

We had the pleasure of Halibut fishing with Capt. Eric with Ear Mountain Charters on July 10th, 2012. Capt. Eric picked up us from our cruise ship in Icy Strait and drove us the short distance to his boat. The boat is very comfortable. Capt. Eric took us to our first and only fishing spot. We immediately began catching large halibut. You are only able to keep 1 halibut per person in Alaska and we fished our limit (5 of us on the boat) in 45 minutes. We continued to fish and just released them for the next couple of hours. It was a fantastic experience and Capt. Eric was a pleasure. We strongly recommend fishing privately with Capt. Eric.

We were on a cruise ship in AK, when we tendered for the day in Icy Straits. We had done our research and discovered that Ear Mountain Charters operated out of there and had great reviews. We scheduled our fishing charter about a week before we were there. We arrived and easily met up with Captain Eric, who is a very kind and knowledgable man. We were joining another couple from the cruise ship, who had also made reservations. They arrived shortly thereafter, and our adventure began. We were spoiled with a beautiful day, with sunshine, and no rain. We did not need our jackets, even on the water that day! It was a short ride to the dock, where we boarded his boat. Thankfully, the other couple we were with were kind, enjoyable people to share the boat with on our adventure. Cap'n Eric suggested we fish for halibut as the salmon had not yet begun their run. We went out about 30 minutes, and Cap'n Eric kept us entertained the whole way. Then as we neared our destination, Cap'n Eric pointed out a brown bear on the beach. The beach was some distance away, but we were still able to make out the bear! We spent a few minutes watching the bear, as Cap'n Eric prepared the fishing equipment for us. Then we began fishing. Within minutes, my husband had a bite and reeled in a 28 lb. halibut! The other couple also were able to catch a number of fish, none keepers, until near the end of our fishing trip when the wife reeled in a 10 lb halibut. My husband also continued to fish and caught some interesting fish, which we released. I, on the otherhand, did not catch one! But this did not take away from the experience for us! We were so happy to be fishing in Alaska! Captain Eric was knowledgeable and had the proper equipment. His boat was comfortable, and he had drinks for us when we got thirsty. When we got back to the dock, we were met by Captain Eric's wife, who then drove us to a small place in Hoonah, which would fillet, freeze, and ship our fish home to us. She dropped us there, while she went back to get the next round of guests for the next charter. We were able to watch our fish get filleted which was also cool. The only area where we would give a negative to this cruise was with the shipping of the fish. We requested she ship it the next day, however, it did not get shipped for 22 days, after we made a number of phone calls. Maybe it was a fluke, but the women explained that things had been "crazy" for her as she got married a few days after we were there, and then her honeymoon, so things got backed up! When it did arrive, it was still frozen and packed appropriately.FYI: It cost about $150 to send home 13 lbs of halibut. We are looking forward to a yummy dinner of halibut as a reminder of the beautiful day in Icy Straits Point, Alaska!Cap'n Eric's wife then returned to pick us up. She was willing to drop us off anywhere in Hoonah, or drive us back to the dock to return to the cruise ship. We choose to be dropped off at a restaurant in Hoonah, and to walk back from there, about a 1.5 mile walk. The restaurant was expensive, and the food was a typical fish fry. When my husband asked for a lemon for his fish, the waitress explained that they only get their food order every two weeks, and the previous order, instead of lemons, they had sent lemon juice, so no lemons were available fro the fish fry. The people were friendly, and we enjoyed talking to a few natives of Hoonah. Our walk back was beautiful, and then we had time to explore the Museum there in Icy Straits, and to sit on the beach at Icy Straits before returning to our cruise ship.

Monday July 2, 2012- Our group of 6 plus Captain Eric went out for a half day of halibut fishing. He had mentioned that 6 people might be a bit tight, but it definitely didn't not feel that way. He meet us right where we got off the tenders from our cruise ship and welcomed us as if we were a local. We took the short ride to his boat and off we went. Our group caught over 10 nice size Halibut and he set us up to have have it shipped back to NY. Eric was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and made the excursion our favorite of the trip! Can't wait for our Halibut to arrive back in NY. Thanks again.

Our cruise was sailing into Icy Strait Point, AK and we didn't see much in the cruise's shore excursion guide that reallly knocked our socks off. So we started hunting around and found Capt. Eric on TripAdvisor. I emailed him about our dates and times and got a quick response. After exchanging a few emails he sent me a Paypal invoice and the trip was booked. The day our cruise docked, we followed Capt. Eric's instructions and met him at the gates outside the cannery. We were on the boat in less than 5 minutes and on our way in another 5 minutes. After purchasing our licenses and getting a short tutorial on fishing technique, we had lines in the water, probably no more than 30 minutes total after stepping off the boat. Unlike many fishing experiences, you won't waste a lot of time with semantics and getting to the fishing grounds. We had several hours of good fishing and ended up catching a total of six fish, four of which were halibut ranging from 25-45 inches in length. We also saw numerous whales- which provided for some great photo opportunities. On our way back, Capt. Eric arranged for our halibut to be processed and shipped back to us once we were home. Also - one interesting note - when we got back on the cruise ship that night, we found that two of our table-mates had used the cruise's halibut fishing shore excursion. Needless to say, they didn't do as well as we did. Our smallest halibut was bigger than their biggest. And they paid more for their trip than we did. Capt. Eric is very kind and knowledgable. His boat and fishing equipment are top-notch. I'd recommend him to anyone, regardless of their skill level.Don't hesitate to book with this guy - he runs an A+ fishing charter.

We had the best excursion whale watching with Eric! Not only did we see whales but Eric knew where bears had been spotted and searched them out for us. His boat is very comfortable and roomy with a washroom on board. Eric supplied binoculars and drinks. He was very knowledgeable and informative. We had a great time and would highly recommend using Ear Mountain Charters. Our trip was 6 people.

We found Eric through Trip Advisor and after speaking with him directly I knew we were going to have an awesome experience. A small boat (six passenger limit) but loaded with all the luxuries we needed for a great trip. The purpose of my trip to Alaska was to see Humpback Whales and Eric made sure my dream came true. He stayed with it until I got my perfect "tail shot". Not only did we see several whales, but he took us in close to the beach and we saw two different bears. We are home now and I can't stop thinking about those majestic giants. I loved it and want to say Thanks Eric you really did give us an experience to treasure. Lorraine and Steve Simpson

We had a chance to book a last minute Alaskan cruise for August, but when I tried to book the Whale Watching trip for our Hoonah shore excursion with the top rated boat tours, they seemed to all be booked. I was disappointed but we were very pleased that we were able to go whale watching with Eric from Ear Mountain, and it was a great experience. He was very professional and took us right where all the whale pods were. It was so much cheaper and easier than booking a whale watching excursion through the cruise line as we had the boat just for our family of five. We were gone about four hours and took tons of photos of the whales. We were able to get very close to them and Eric said that we saw more whale pods that day than they'd seen all summer. He knows right where to go. He owns his boat and is very knowledgeable about the area. I would recommend bringing plenty of snacks, drinks, and rain gear. He picked us up by the dock and returned us there. Not much else to see or do in the area but the whale watching was outstanding.

We loved our morning with Captain Eric and his son, our first mate! We had booked our charter ahead of time and were pleased to have a fellow cruise traveler and his son join us. We were on our way to our fishing spot within 30 minutes of coming to shore. The four of us caught around 45 halibut total. We received wonderful personal service and have not one negative thing to say. A highlight of our Alaska trip!

My husband and I went whale watching with Capt. Eric in Sept. 2011. This was the only excursion we booked and were really looking forward to it. The experience was fantastic. We saw numerous whales, a bald eagle, sea lions and sea otters. Capt. Eric was very accommodating and obviously knew the area very well. I would highly recommend booking a whale watch with Ear Mountain Charters versus the any whale watching offered by the cruises. We were the only two people on the boat (aside from Eric and he could take up to 6 people). We saw the cruise whale watch as we returned- about 150 people on it! We took crystal clear pictures of whales 15 feet from the boat- not going to get that on the cruise tour with someone's head in your way! ;)

Really enjoyed the half day salmon fishing trip with Capt. Eric. He gave us lots of interesting information about commercial fishing and crabbing in Alaska. Plenty of time out on the water so that we could have the opportunity to catch some salmon! And we did! We also had the opportunity to see some whales from the boat in the distance that was an eye opener as well. I really loved the opportunity to experience fishing in Alaska and Capt. Eric really provided us a great day on his boat.

Just returned from our Alaskan cruise. Spent the day with Captain Eric on 7/4/11. Could not have asked for a better whale watching experience. He made our trip personal and exciting. His knowledge of the area and wildlife was great. His personal stories about the waters and the whales were interesting and fun. He gave us information about the small town of Hoonah and its people with a great recommendation for lunch. We ate at Chipper Fish in Hoonah. It was undoubtedly the best meal we had during our cruise. Salmon taco and clam chowder prepared by one of Captain Eric's former students. At one point, there were whales all around us. We weren't sure which way to look. Great experience. Highly recommend this tour.

Hired fishing/whale watching guide Eric Williams for a half-day charter out of Icy Strait Point. Our cruise ship tendered us to the pier and Eric was waiting for us.Fished for 4 hours or so with eagles, whales, and salmon all around us. Caught eight salmon, with pretty steady action the whole morning. Eric worked very hard and gave us every opportunity to catch fish.Zach, his ten year old boy, was our bait catcher (herring) and a supurb deckhand. We could not have wished for a better charter. Spent three weeks in Alaska and this was one of our best experiences.
